15 - TAXILE-MAXIMIN DOAT (1851–1938)

TAXILE-MAXIMIN DOAT (1851–1938) Large oval medallion, 1924. Made of white and blue porcelain with a relief decoration in white paste-on-paste on a blue background, depicting a scene in the classical style. Signed, dated, and marked “Céramique Doat 1924 Sèvres.” In a gilded wooden frame. 27.5 x 21.8 cm (visible dimensions) (Stains, a chip in the frame) Additional information: The paste-on-paste technique, which Taxile Doat helped bring to a remarkable degree of refinement, involves successively applying thin layers of white porcelain onto a colored background. The design is then meticulously modeled and sculpted before firing to create a delicate relief with effects of transparency and depth. The contrast between the matte whiteness of the paste and the colored background evokes the art of cameo carving, lending the compositions great sculptural subtlety and an almost three-dimensional quality.
