Charles MALLE (1935–2023). "Normandy—Barges Beneath the Wave." Oil on canvas, signed lower right and titled on the back of the stretcher. Height: 46 cm - Width: 55 cm Charles MALLE was born in Douai, in northern France. He discovered drawing upon his father’s death in 1950 and continued his studies at the Beaux-Arts school in Saint-Luc-de-Tournai, Belgium, where he was introduced to Flemish art and snow-covered landscapes. He later attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Industries Textiles in Roubaix. He paints warm urban landscapes, imbued with a certain nostalgia for his youth in the North. His paintings feature numerous figures going about their daily lives, particularly in his works set in Paris. The colorful forms of the landscapes are outlined with black lines that give structure to his compositions.
