[MILITARIA] Jean-Baptiste LA LIVE DE SUCY - Manual for Cavalrymen for Use by the King’s Mounted Grenadier Company, by M.L.L. de S., Cavalry Field Commander and Lieutenant of the said company Published by the Widow Delorme, Paris, 1752—A very rare first edition, featuring a frontispiece by Cochin engraved by Lalive de Jully, 10 technical plates, and a fold-out plate depicting the various parts of the horse, taken from La Guérinière’s famous *Éléments de cavalerie*. A fine copy in a period binding of full calfskin, with a smooth, richly decorated spine and a morocco title label, triple gilded fillet borders on the covers with angular fleurons, and gilt edges. Minor, insignificant rubbing and imperfections. The author, La Live de Sucy, an infantry officer and lieutenant in the Régiment du Lyonnais in 1725, was appointed sergeant in the Mounted Grenadiers Company in 1742. He was the nephew of the farmer-general Lalive de Bellegarde and a first cousin of the amateur painter and engraver Lalive de Jully.
