A MAGHRIBI MANUSCRIPT COMPENDIUM OF GRAMMATICAL AND SUFI POEMS, DATED 1215–1219 AH/1800–1805 AD An Arabic manuscript on paper, written in Maghribi script, comprising a collection of poetic compositions and treatises devoted to Arabic grammar and grammatical analysis, Sufism, and devotional poetry in praise of the Prophet Muhammad. The volume reflects the North African tradition of compiling didactic, literary and devotional texts within a single manuscript. The first poem is a didactic composition on Arabic grammar and iʿrāb, treating such subjects as the grammatical analysis of verbs, the subject, the mubtadaʾ and khabar (subject and predicate), and adverbial expressions of time and place. It is attributed to Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Muhammad ibn Dawud and is dated 1219 AH / 1804–1805 AD. The second poem is a Sufi composition of devotional poetry in praise of the Prophet Muhammad, attributed to the jurist and scholar Sidi Muḥammad ibn Ahmad, a descendant of Sidi Ahmad ibn Musa. The text is dated 1215 AH / 1800–1801 AD. The third poem is a Sufi composition by Shaykh Abu al-Hasan ʿAIi ibn Muḥammad, known as al-Barbari, forming another component of the manuscript’s devotional and mystical contents. The fourth poem is attributed to Sidi Muhammad ʿAbd al-Wāhid ibn ʿĀsh, and forms part of the collection of literary and Sufi compositions preserved in the volume. The manuscript is particularly notable for bringing together grammatical instruction, poetic learning, Sufi thought and Prophetic praise, illustrating the diverse intellectual and devotional traditions of the Maghrib. Dates: 1215–1219 AH / 1800–1805 AD. Housed in deep brown leather binding. 22 by 16 cm.
