525 - Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864–1901)"Napoleon" Lithograph 20th century Artist/Designer/Manufacturer: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864–1901) Materials: Color lithograph on paper Marking(s): Monogram: Features the artist’s famous circular stylized initials stamp (HTL) printed in the stone at the lower left corner. Signature: Plate-signed "Lautrec" in running cursive adjacent to the monogram stamp. Inscription: Includes a hand-written or stamped pencil edition notation to the left of the signature (reads as a specific collection or number, e.g., "No 44" or similar from the numbered edition of 100). Cataloguer's Note: Created in 1895, Napoléon represents a rare, historical departure from Toulouse-Lautrec’s quintessential Parisian cabaret, dance hall, and brothel themes. This composition was originally created as a submission for a poster design competition sponsored by the Century Company in New York to promote a new biography on Napoleon Bonaparte. While another design ultimately won the commission, Lautrec was so pleased with his work that he famously chose to publish an elite, independent run of 100 high-quality color prints with the premier Parisian master printer Edward Ancourt. Frame H 25.5" x W 19.5" Image (as seen) H 17" x 13.5" Good pre-owned condition. Unless otherwise stated, all information provided is the opinion of our specialists.
