Castiglione, Giovanni Benedetto Bearded Man with a Feathered Hat (Portrait of Gian Lorenzo Bernini?). Etching. 14.9 x 12.6 cm. B. 31, Bellini 8, TIB (Commentary) .031 S3. Handwritten inscription. The question of the subject’s identity has been answered in various ways in the literature—while Bartsch, Nagler, and Le Blanc viewed it as a self-portrait of Castiglione, Marcenaro and Bellini consider it a portrait of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and date it to the late 1640s, around the time the series “Great Oriental Heads” was created. The influence of Rembrandt’s self-portraits is unmistakable. An excellent print, trimmed to the image and signature, with approximately 4 cm trimmed at the top and bottom and approximately 1 cm on the left and right. Slightly dusty and faintly stained; a small rust spot at the lower left; pen numbering and faint crease marks at the lower left; pencil annotations on the reverse; otherwise in good condition.
