Baugniet, Charles Portrait of Horace Vernet. Lithograph on rolled China paper. 61.2 x 45 cm (sheet size); 40 x 32 cm (image). 1837. IFF from 6. Charles Baugniet’s portrait of the renowned history and military painter Horace Vernet is taken from his portfolio published in 1839, titled *Les artistes contemporains: Portraits. Lithographiés d’après nature par C. Baugniet. This portfolio contained lithographic portraits and descriptions of a total of 30 contemporary artists, including Louis Gallait, Eugène Simonis, Paul Delaroche, and Hippolyte Bellangé. Following a collection of portraits of members of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives published as early as 1835, as well as a series of portraits of prominent musicians, Baugniet’s popularity and reputation grew to such an extent that he received commissions from the royal family and, beginning in 1841, held the title of Dessinateur du Roi. An excellent print with a wide margin. The margins show slight foxing and are slightly browned; there is minimal dust and mounting marks on the reverse; otherwise in excellent condition. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
