5290 - Tiepolo, Giovanni Domenico

Tiepolo, Giovanni Domenico Strength and Virtue Drive Out Ignorance. Etching. 40.6 x 48.4 cm. De Vesme 102, Rizzi 111 I (of II), Succi 33 I (of III). Signed: Tre Lune. This masterful, majestic composition is based on a ceiling painting by his father, Giambattista, which he created between 1745 and 1750 for the Palazzo Manin in Venice. According to Succi, the etching was certainly created before the two artists’ stay in Würzburg (1749–50). An excellent, nuanced proof print, made before the plate was finalized and before numerous areas in the cloudy sky were darkened, and before the inscription and number were added. With a uniform margin. Minor signs of wear, slightly creased, two small tears along the edge expertly and barely visibly repaired, other minimal imperfections; however, the overall impression is very good. Only one print of this very earliest printing state is known to exist. - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
