This portrait of Louis Petit de Bachaumont was created by the painter, copperplate engraver, etcher, and writer Jean-Pierre Louis Laurent Houël (1735–1813) after a drawing by Carmontelle, which is now in the Musée Condé in Chantilly (Inv. CAR 390). Louis Petit de Bachaumont was a physician, writer, and salon critic. He frequented Madame Doublet’s salon and edited the *Nouvelles à la main* compiled there, which were distributed by subscription and sometimes disseminated sensational news about court life, politics, and culture. Bachaumont is depicted against a fictional backdrop featuring part of the Louvre and the column dedicated to Catherine de’ Medici at the Hôtel de Soissons, which Bachaumont had worked to preserve and to which the caption refers. Excellent print with a margin around the sharply defined plate edge.
