Vegelin van Claerbergen, *David Teniers and the Theatre of Painting*, exhibition catalog, London 2006, no. 5. Strasbourg banded coat of arms with secondary mark. "As director of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm’s gallery, Teniers published the series of copperplate engravings known as the ‘Teniers Gallery,’ which reproduced the finest paintings by Italian masters from the archducal gallery as etchings. For this work, Teniers himself copied 244 paintings from the gallery, which served as models for the engravers [...]” (Wurzbach). This compilation of the most significant artists of the Italian Renaissance and their works was first published in 1660. It includes, among others, copperplate engravings based on paintings by Jacopo Bellini, Leonardo da Vinci, Antonio da Correggio, Paolo Veronese, Titian, Raphael, Michelangelo, and many more. In addition to the engravers Jan van Troyen, Lucas Vorstermann II, and Coryn Boel, Pieter van Lisebetten, Theodor van Kessel, Jan van Ossenbeeck, Frans van der Steen, Nicolaus de Hoey IV, Remoldus Eynhoudts, Conrad Lauwers, Dominicus Claessens, and Jan Popels also worked on the engravings. The nearly complete set—only “Susanna and the Two Elders,” no. 233, by Van Lisebetten is missing—is in excellent to very excellent condition, with some strong impressions featuring fine smudges and margins. Shows some foxing, is slightly browned, and the outer margins are soiled or, in some places, have a slight water stain; there are isolated creases or crush marks, partial tiny rust spots, and other minor signs of wear; otherwise in fine condition.
