Monogrammist AG The Crowning with Thorns. Copperplate engraving. 14.7 x 10.5 cm. B. VI, p. 347, 8; Lehrs VI, p. 108, 12 I (of III). Mark: Coat of arms with crossed diagonal bars; above it, the serpent on a staff. From the Passion series, preceding the text on the reverse. Excellent, nuanced print with smudges and scribbles, featuring a very fine border; in some places, cut slightly too close to the margin. Minor signs of wear, thin spots, small mounting residues on the reverse, and only slight handling marks; otherwise in fine condition. From the collection of Hans von und zu Aufsess (Lugt 5084), bearing a duplicate stamp from the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg that is likely unlisted (not in Lugt) as well as the cancellation stamp of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich (Lugt 2397). Included with this lot is an equilateral repeat of the copperplate engraving “Christ in Limbo” (see Lot 16). - We ask that you request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is only indicated in the catalog in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
