Vintage 1962 New Orleans Press Photo – Investors at Merrill Lynch Brokerage Office During Market Slump. Original vintage black-and-white gelatin silver press photograph capturing a compelling, high-angle interior view of an investor gallery inside a brokerage office, dated May 29, 1962 [image_pTamS-.png]. The scene frames a quiet, somber row of men and women in mid-century suits and hats seated at desks, their attention intently fixed upon the massive mechanical electric quote board overhead tracking market tickers beneath the bold corporate branding of "MERRILL LYNCE PIERCE FEN[NER & SMITH]" . The reverse of the photograph features an attached newspaper caption slug that documents the immediate financial drama: "INTERESTED INVESTORS STUDY movement of stock prices on electric board at New Orleans office of Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith, Inc., this morning after yesterday's near record slump. Many were encouraged as the market put on a rally today. (See story on Page 3.) —States-Item photo." [image_pTamS-.png] The back is heavily marked with authentic newsroom provenance, including a handwritten newspaper article clipping headlined "N.O. Brokers Believe Stocks Were Too High", a purple ink archive stamp reading "MAY 29 1962", and grease pencil production annotations (4 Cols x 4 1/4" / ORLEANS / STATES-ITEM RED FLASH) . This fascinating image captures the immediate local response to the infamous "Flash Crash of 1962" (also known as the Kennedy Slide), a major systemic market drop that occurred on Monday, May 28, 1962, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average collapsed by 34.95 points in a single day—ranking at that time as the second-largest point decline in Wall Street history, exceeded only by the Crash of October 29, 1929. An extraordinary financial Americana cross-section capturing early corporate brokerage infrastructure and mid-century investor culture. The print is preserved in excellent, authentic newsroom repository condition with crisp contrast and full border margins.
