154 - Clemens Kalischer, Girl with Cat, New York City, c. 1947–1950. Clemens Kalischer (1921-2018) was an American photojournalist and art photographer. He was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States. His series of photographs of displaced persons arriving in New York City from displaced persons camps in post-World War II Europe, taken in 1947 and 1948, was his most recognized work. Kalischer's work extends the tradition of photojournalism inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson and André Kertész. His recent interest in agriculture, architecture, education, the environment, music, religion, and socioeconomic matters, however, adds a level of personal dedication to his images that pushes his body of work beyond its aesthetic precedents.

Girl with Cat, New York City, c. 1947–1950, original vintage gelatin silver print, reverse features Kalischer’s early New York studio stamp ("Credit Photo To Clem Kalischer, 46 West 83rd Street, N.Y. 24, TR. 7-0336"), hand-signed/canceled in grease pencil, with extensive handwritten editorial notes, technical camera specs ("f. 5.6, 1/50, XX film"), sizing crop marks ("7" deep"), and serial inventory markers (000317 / KC7345). Dimensions approximately 9.5" x 7.5". This exceptionally rare, heart-warming piece comes from Kalischer's highly sought-after initial period working out of Manhattan. It captures a young African American girl seated in a wooden spindle-back chair, looking down with a gentle, joyful expression as she cradles a tabby cat in her lap. Demonstrating Kalischer's celebrated knack for capturing unposed human warmth amidst urban settings, this early photojournalistic masterwork is highly collectible due to the wealth of production provenance visible on the reverse. The provenance of this photograph is from the collection of a deceased collector in Puerto Rico. THIS IS A RESERVE AUCTION, and the final price will include a Buyer’s Premium.
