Printed in an edition of 301 copies; this one (no. 5), initialed by the publisher, ONE OF THE 25 HEAD COPIES ON ANCIENT JAPANESE PAPER (based on a single copy), containing AN ADDITIONAL SET OF ILLUSTRATIONS in the first state with a note, A REJECTED PLATE (that of Chapter XXVII) with a note, and AN UNPUBLISHED ORIGINAL SIGNED DRAWING. Enclosed: two illustrated subscription prospectuses for this edition (one of which is bound in laid paper); and the illustrated prospectus for the Edouard Pelletan edition with the frontispiece engraved by Félicien ROPS (foxing and a tear).
