294 - Sid GROSSMAN (1913–1955). The Life and Work of Sid Grossman. Like new, in its original plastic wrap. This retrospective, compiled from the Howard Greenberg Collection, accompanies a solo exhibition at the 2016 Rencontres d’Arles. It offers a fresh look at New Yorker Sid Grossman, co-founder of the Photo League in 1936, who taught students including Lisette Model, Arthur Leipzig, and Louis Stettner. Blurring the lines between documentary and street photography, he focused particularly on the impoverished neighborhoods of Harlem and Chelsea, exposing the unsanitary conditions of the buildings there. Suspected of being a communist, he was ultimately blacklisted by the FBI in 1947. Radical for its time, his work—now being brought back into the spotlight—illustrates the expressionist energy of the “New York School” of the 1950s. – Leon LEVINSTEIN (1910–1988). Leon Levinstein.
