The Zeitungsfotos (Newspaper Photographs) series was inspired by a fundamental question Ruff asked himself while he was a student at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf: How do we process visual information? And how and when does this information become meaningful? Ruff had been collecting newspaper images since the early 1980s and selected 400 of them for this series. Printed across two columns instead of one, the enlarged re-photographs are presented without captions or additional context: the only information provided is Ruff’s selection of the image. By asking viewers to engage with the visual information on their own, the artist draws attention to the constructed and subjective nature of all photography.
