A rare collection of 50 etchings based on original drawings by Auguste-Etienne Guillaumot Jr., each preceded by a leaf bearing the names of the actor, the character, the play, and the date of the performance. This copy, entirely mounted on tabs, contains a half-title page and a title page printed on heavy paper, one black-and-white plate captioned “17th-century artist’s dressing room,” and 49 costume plates in two states—black-and-white and in color (except for the 31st, Molière: 2 versions in black), each preceded by its printed caption. A unique copy, enriched with 23 original watercolors of these costumes, most bearing the artist’s monogram with hand-drawn captions. Heavy foxing on the 4 pages of the preface; foxing on some of the drawings and plates.
