[VAYSSE DE VILLIERS (Jean)]. A Road and Geographical Description of the French Empire, Divided into Four Regions. [—of France and Italy]. Paris: Potey, 1813–1823. 14 in-8 volumes, grained calfskin, fleur-de-lis-patterned embossing, coat of arms in the center, plain spine decorated with fleurs-de-lis, green title and volume number labels, gilt edges, gilt interior embossing (contemporary binding). First edition of this pioneering road and travel guide to France, extending as far as Italy. Published by Jean Vaysse de Villiers (1767–1834), inspector of post stations, it provides highly accurate itineraries, accompanied by extensive commentary highlighting the picturesque and economic attractions of the regions traversed. The work, initially comprising 6 volumes published in 1813, was later supplemented by a series of 14 volumes published through 1835. This fine set of the first 14 volumes (out of 20) is illustrated with 15 engraved fold-out maps showing the routes in color, and a map of Versailles (vol. XIV). Copy bearing the coat of arms of Louis-Antoine d’Artois, Duke of Angoulême, Grand Admiral of France, and eldest son of Charles X (OHR, pl. 2552, stamp no. 1). Stamp of the Château d’Abondant Library. Hinges are scuffed and occasionally cracked. Some foxing.
