MANUSCRIPT. — Book of Hours for use in Rouen. In French and Latin, an illuminated manuscript on parchment. France, Normandy, circa 1430–1450. 78 folios, preceded by 4 paper end-leaves and one end-leaf of old parchment, followed by 4 paper end-leaves; manuscript with lacunae; bound out of order; collation impractical; Gothic script in brown ink, text copied in 16 lines per page, ruled in ink (text size: 87 x 50 mm), headings in red, line ends decorated in red and blue ink, capitals painted in red or blue, gold initials on blue and pink backgrounds with white highlights (2 to 3 lines high), major textual divisions marked by gold, blue, and pink, and gold vine leaves and black ink scrollwork. Blue morocco leather binding, spine with 4 raised bands, gold fillets on the raised bands, gold lettering: “HEURES A L'USAGE DE ROUEN,” a simple gold fillet framing the covers, gold coat of arms in the center of the covers, gold fillet on the edges, gold fillet framing the endpapers, bluish marbled paper on the endpapers and the front of the first flyleaf, gilt edges. Binding signed “Creuzevault” at the bottom of the upper endpaper. Upper jaw rubbed, a few minor scuffs, nothing serious; a beautiful binding. Dimensions of the binding: 140 x 100 mm; dimensions of the leaves: 135 x 90 mm. Provenance: 1. Manuscript copied in Normandy (Rouen?) for liturgical use in Rouen (Book of Hours of the Virgin). A date of circa 1430–1450 is based on the handwriting and style of the ornamentation. - 2. Count Chandon de Briailles (Henri de Chandon de Briailles or François de Chandon de Briailles (1892–1956)), a printed ex-libris vignette pasted on the reverse of the first endpaper, with “MSS 154. 1921.” Gilded coat of arms in the center of the covers: Argent, a fess Gules accompanied by three trefoils Sable (Chandon de Briailles). Count François Chandon de Briailles, along with his brother Henri, inherited part of the library of Raoul Chandon de Briailles (1850–1908), himself a historian and founder of the Chandon de Briailles champagne brand. A Chartist and specialist in numismatics, genealogy, heraldry, and archaeology, François Chandon de Briailles was passionate about the history of Champagne; he served as president of the Aube Archaeological Society and as mayor of Chaource from 1922 until his death in 1953. He collected books, manuscripts, archives, works of art, and seals.
