These engravings from the series The First Steeple-Chase on Record by Henry Alken, engraved by J Harris and published by R Ackermann, London 1839. Plate I - Ipswich, the Watering-place behind the Barracks Plate II - The large field near Biles's Corner Plate III - The last field near Nacton Heath Plate IV - Nacton Church and Village This complete set of four beautiful aquatints depicts the first steeple-chase race on record. The plates were published in A Monthly Chronicle of The Turf, The Chase, and Rural Sports in all their varieties, a nineteenth century monthly publication, which reported on the present day equestrian sporting life. Drawn by Henry Alken, a leading British sporting artist. Size: 10.5in x 14.5in (26.7cm x 36.8cm).
