The text reveals the city through the eyes of a learned and passionate historian, in which the Seine takes center stage. It explores the history of monuments and neighborhoods over the centuries through the perspectives offered by “The Japanese Man of Montparnasse.” The glamorous Paris, the hard-working Paris, the erotic Paris... The artist lived through the Belle Époque and the Roaring Twenties and rubbed shoulders with the greatest artists at the famous cafés Le Select and La Coupole. He was among those who shaped the image of Paris that the whole world knows, and for good reason: in addition to being famous himself, he mingled with all the celebrities of his time. Amedeo Modigliani and Chaïm Soutine were his immediate neighbors at the Cité Falguière, and he developed a close friendship with them. He met Pablo Picasso the very next day after his arrival from Japan. Among his other artistic acquaintances were Henri Matisse, Fernand Léger, Juan Gris, Moïse Kisling, Jules Pascin, Ossip Zadkine, Kees van Dongen, Maurice Utrillo, and Marie Laurencin. Foujita was an eccentric dandy, highly regarded in avant-garde intellectual and literary circles. He regularly socialized with figures such as Jean Cocteau, Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob, and Blaise Cendrars. He also associated with Robert Desnos, the future partner of Youki, Foujita’s ex-wife, as well as Colette and André Gide. Among composers, Maurice Ravel, Francis Poulenc, and Darius Milhaud were part of his circle. A fixture at costume balls and high-society parties, he spent his nights at La Rotonde, Le Dôme, or La Coupole in the company of Kiki de Montparnasse—the legendary model for his nudes against a milky-white background—and the surrealist photographer Man Ray. His acquaintances also included Josephine Baker, Charlie Chaplin, Maurice Chevalier, and Mistinguett. In his circle
