François de Ribaupierre 1886 Clarens – 1981 La Tour-de-Peilz Le Grammont Oil on canvas Monogrammed lower left: F. De R Framed 39 × 81.5 cm Le Grammont, on the opposite shore of Lake Geneva, is one of the most famous mountain motifs in Swiss painting. Ferdinand Hodler, in particular, devoted a series of paintings to the massif between 1905 and 1917, in which he increasingly reduced the landscape to horizontal pictorial zones and subtly graded areas of color. This work by François de Ribaupierre also reveals an affinity with Hodler’s approach to landscape in its clear division of shore, lake, mountains, and sky. The delicate shades of blue, green, and violet lend the painting a serene atmosphere. Ribaupierre, who grew up in Clarens and spent his entire life intensely engaged with the landscapes of the Lake Geneva region and the Valais, developed a distinctive painterly style in the process.
