Brignoni Framed 45 × 46.5 cm Serge Brignoni is one of the leading Swiss representatives of Surrealism. After training with Victor Surbek in Bern and spending time studying in Milan and Berlin, he moved to Paris in 1923, where he studied under André Lhote and came into contact with the international avant-garde. His artistic development was shaped in particular by his encounters with Alberto Giacometti, Max Ernst, and the circle around André Breton. In 1940, he returned to Switzerland and settled in Bern. In his paintings and sculptures, he developed a distinctive visual language in which organic, plant-like, and human elements merge into imaginative forms. He also drew significant inspiration from his intensive engagement with non-European art, an extensive collection of which he donated to the city of Lugano in 1985.
