Previously, the painter, who was originally from Goa, had been expelled from the Sir J. J. School of Art due to his political activities. In 1949, he moved to London, where he established himself as an artist in the years that followed. Religious themes, social taboos, and the human figure were central to his work throughout his life. In his paintings and works on paper, he developed an expressive visual language characterized by bold contours and abstract forms.
