The woodblock used for this print was originally intended as the background block for the cover of Wagner’s *Die Walküre*. In his monograph published in 1898, Julius Meier-Graefe mentions three woodblocks that were intended to depict the fire magic in a decorative form. The woodblocks, which were not originally intended for printing, were used to design an ornate score cover. Of the three woodblocks, only two are believed to have survived. In 1965, a small number of posthumous prints of the background block were produced under the title *Clouds*, which are rarely found on the art market today.
