Marc Chagall 1887 Vitebsk – 1985 Vence L'aurore. 1983 Color lithograph on Arches vellum with infinity symbol (with watermark) 40/50. Signed lower right: Marc Chagall. Studio stamp No. 405 on the reverse Framed 54.5 × 43 cm (sheet size) Mourlot 1014 Marc Chagall is considered one of the most important artists of the modern era. In his distinctive visual universe, he combined motifs from his Jewish-Eastern European heritage with poetic dream worlds, biblical themes, and a colorful, symbolic visual language. The color lithograph on offer, “L’aurore” (Dawn), is representative of Chagall’s late printmaking. With vibrant colors and freely combined motifs, the artist blends personal memories with universal imagery, preserving the poetic expressiveness that characterized his work well into his later years. At the center of the print stands a half-figure with two faces, holding a rooster and a bouquet of flowers. On the left, the sun shines, while on the right, a faintly suggested crescent moon hovers in the sky; another yellow crescent moon appears in front of the figure’s arm. The rooster—traditionally a harbinger of the breaking day—and the flowers can be interpreted as symbols of awakening, vitality, and renewal. The sun and moon combine different states of light and lend the depiction a dreamlike, timeless atmosphere. The title thus suggests an interpretation as an image of transition and new beginnings, in which day and night subtly intertwine. Chagall thus unfolds a poetic visual world in which nature, time, and the human form exist within a multifaceted symbolic context.
