Huber Johann Caspar 1752 Glattfelden – 1827 Zurich Coastal Landscape with Sailing Ships. 1821 Oil on oak Signed and dated lower center: JC Huber pxt. 1821 Framed 49.5 × 71.5 cm Johann Caspar Huber began his training with Johann Heinrich Wüest in Zurich before his artistic career took him via Frankfurt and Düsseldorf to Amsterdam. Dutch landscape and marine painting, in particular, had a lasting influence on his work. During his stays in Holland, he found abundant inspiration for his paintings along the North Sea coast. In 1789, he returned to Zurich, where he continued to paint landscapes and seascapes. This coastal landscape, painted in 1821, is thus part of his late work and follows in the tradition of Dutch marine painting. Small scratch and retouched areas of color loss in the sky.
