Originally trained by Alexandre Calame, whom he accompanied on study trips to Italy and the Bernese Oberland, he increasingly turned toward a freer and more atmospheric interpretation of nature. In addition to Swiss mountain landscapes, he painted French woodlands, river scenes, and coastal views, focusing particularly on the changing light conditions. Between 1855 and 1882, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and was one of the leading figures in 19th-century Geneva landscape painting. With older restorations and minor retouching.
