The Virgin of the Little Bird with the Child Jesus and Saint John, attributed to Giuseppe Porta Salviati, 16th-century Italian Mannerist school Giuseppe Porta, better known as Giuseppe Salviati, il Salviati, or il Salviatino (Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, 1520–Venice, 1575), was an Italian Mannerist painter. He was a disciple of Francesco Salviati during his time in Rome, from whom he adopted the surname. He followed him to Venice in 1539, where he established a workshop in which he adapted the Roman Mannerist style to Venetian tastes, under the growing influence of Titian and Paolo Veronese. He created various fresco decorations in Venetian villas and palaces, most of which are lost today. In 1565 he returned to Rome, where he participated in the decoration of the Scala Regia in the Vatican Apostolic Palace. Bibliography: Garzanti Encyclopedia of Art, p. 864.
