The Stoning of the Adulterous Woman, 17th-century Italian school Oil on canvas, unframed, dimensions: 117 x 97 cm. The episode depicted here is recounted in the Gospel of John (Jn 8:1–11), when Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Very early in the morning, he returned to the Temple again, and all the people came to him; he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in the act of adultery and placed her in the middle: “Teacher,” they said to him, “this woman has been caught in the very act of adultery. Moses, in the Law, commanded us to stone women like this; what do you say?”—They said this to test him, hoping to find a reason to accuse him. But Jesus bent down and began to write with his finger on the ground. As they continued to press him, he stood up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Then he bent down again and continued writing on the ground. Upon hearing this, they began to leave one by one, starting with the oldest, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing in the middle. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, Lord,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go in peace, and from now on do not sin anymore.” Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous repairs.
