570 - The Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane - Bassano School. 17th century

The Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane - Bassano School. 17th century Oil on copper. Dimensions: 58 x 74 cm. Christ is depicted kneeling in the center of the nocturnal scene, enveloped in a supernatural light emanating from the angel holding the chalice, a symbol of his imminent sacrifice. Around him, the disciples sleep soundly, oblivious to the divine drama unfolding. The full moon dimly illuminates the background of the garden, where a group of soldiers can be seen approaching through an open door. The composition plays with contrasts of light and shadow, underscoring the tension between Christ’s divinity and humanity. The meticulously rendered robes and dramatic gestures reveal a remarkable narrative sensitivity. The carved and gilded frame, adorned with vegetal scrolls, reinforces the theatricality of the scene. The work reflects the stylistic canons of the Antwerp School of the mid-17th century, in which rich Flemish colors converge with intense spirituality. The pictorial quality is evident in the expressiveness of Jesus’s face and in the detailed nocturnal landscape, which carries a silent emotional charge. A work of profound symbolic depth and contemplative power. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions.
