549 - Crucifixion on Calvary. Italian School. 17th century

Crucifixion on Calvary. Italian School. 17th century Oil on copper. Dimensions: 31.8 x 23 cm (43 x 34.5 x 6 cm with frame). A private devotional work depicting the Crucifixion of Christ on Calvary, with the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross, beneath a twilight sky. The meticulous brushwork and the luminosity of the copper lend the scene a spiritual vibrancy and a chromatic depth that accentuate its mystical dimension. The balanced composition, the delicate modeling of the faces, and the restrained drama are reminiscent of the Italian school of around 1600, particularly that of Bologna. The inscription on the back reads: “It comes from the old church of San Leonardo de la Croce on the Seine,” adding considerable historical and devotional value. A work of extraordinary quality and condition, it is a prime example of the technical refinement of painting on copper in the early Baroque period. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
