SAND, George (known as Aurore Dupin, Baroness Dudevant) [Paris, 1804 – Nohant, 1876], French novelist. Autograph letter signed “Aur.D.” addressed to Baroness Dudevant. Nohant, April 30, 1826; 4 pages, in-4°, with postmarks. The young Aurore Dupin sends her condolences regarding this sad event. She later provides an update on her health, which is quite good. She provides news of her brother and her son, who is complaining about the absence of his favorite hen!! “I was saddened to learn of the tragic event that has once again plunged you into sorrow and reawakened the grief you were already feeling so deeply. We learn of and feel your painful and sorrowful situation with the bitter fear of being unable to ease it, since nothing can replace what you have lost and no consolation can reach—I feel this—your broken heart. [...] I still have pains that wander—sometimes in my chest, sometimes in my lower back and ribs—and a persistent ache in my head.”
