SÉVIGNÉ Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de [Paris, 1626 – Château de Grignan, Drôme, 1696], French woman of letters. Autograph letter signed “M. de Rabutin Chantal” addressed to Hérigoyen. Saturday, February 15, 1687; 3 pages, small 8vo. A rare, unpublished letter to her business manager regarding her estate at Le Buron. “I have instructed you to carry out the necessary repairs; it would be strange indeed to leave the mills and the farmstead in such a state that they are of no use to us. You may be sure that this is not my intention, You are also to draw up reports on the condition of the property, but I would like this to be done at the lowest possible cost, for the less you charge La Jarye (her tenant farmer), the more I will receive.” She recommends sending 1,300 francs to Mr. d’Harouys (her principal creditor). “You are writing to me from the year 86; you know how to have the sums sent to me as you receive them.” She then explains how to send them to her.
