Paul Jean Decrind (1916–1995) Bruges, the Burgundian Cross Oil on hardboard, signed and dated in the lower right corner, countersigned and titled on the reverse 46 x 55 cm Condition report: Framed This painting offers a vision of the famous Flemish city that is both poetic and structured. The painter employs a firm and generous Post-Impressionist brushstroke to capture the characteristic brick- and ochre-toned facades lining the canals. Decrind builds his composition around a striking interplay of reflections: the lower half of the painting is devoted to the vibrant reflections of the houses and vegetation in the still water, upon which rest two white boats that catch the light. The atmosphere, bathed in a gentle autumnal melancholy, enhances the tranquility of this historic urban landscape through a harmonious palette of warm hues contrasted by deep blues and purples.
