Marbled calfskin of the period, triple gilt fillet encircling the covers, smooth spines with gilt floral motifs, black title labels, marbled edges (scuffed, worm damage in a few vols., a few small areas of skin loss and crazing, worn caps and a few missing, corners blunted and some exposed, 3 title labels missing, some internal clasps partially split, some quires partially detached, some endpapers heavily water-stained, vol. 64 damaged and vol. 45 in poor condition: severe water damage and deteriorated front endpapers, covers gaping). A monumental edition financed by Beaumarchais and compiled with the assistance of Condorcet (whose biography of Voltaire opens the final volume), also published in 70 in-8° volumes. It was the first to include Voltaire’s voluminous correspondence and served as the basis for all subsequent editions. Illustrations include three portraits of Voltaire (vols. 1, 16, and 40), the frontispiece based on N. de Largillière, the full-page map (vol. 27), and the 14 plates on physics at the end of vol. 39.
