[Low Countries] 1634, 16.5 x 9.5 x 10.5 cm, wood covered with black leather, richly blind-stamped “à la grotesque” with repeated small patterns and geometric compartments; the domed lid features a central rosette; brass fittings include a curved carrying handle, two hinges, and two clasps; the underside is similarly decorated and stamped with the date “1634,” on four turned white feet; interior lined with red paper; the exposed edges of the main compartment painted red; with a purple velvet-lined ring compartment (minor rubbing on the leather; the upper end of one hinge missing; signs of use on the interior, including a small tear in the paper lining on one side). In good condition. The dense blind-stamped decoration is closely related to contemporary bookbinding techniques. The form and decoration are consistent with leather-covered caskets produced in the Low Countries during the first half of the 17th century. The precise place of manufacture remains uncertain.
