1074 - RINCVELT, from [Coat of Arms Garden] “A Brief Description of the Very Ancient, Noble, and Rich Duchy of Brabant [...]”. [Leuven] J.B. Zangrius 1600 Engraving, 45.5 x 54.5 cm, laid paper sheet: 50 x 61.5 cm, signed "Excudebat Io. Baptista Zangrius" (slight browning, some foxing, light creases, a few tears with minimal loss of paper in the white margin on the right). Spectacular “coat-of-arms garden” depicting the Duchy of Brabant, dated 1600 at the top of the plate and on the privilege signed in Leuven by I. de Busschere. The plate illustrates the general political and social organization of the duchy through heraldry. In the center, an enclosure is punctuated by towers bearing the coats of arms of the cities of Brabant. At the top of the enclosure, a canopy contains the interlaced ciphers and coats of arms of Archdukes Albert and Isabella, along with those of Brabant, Lothier, and the Marquisate of the Holy Roman Empire. Next, arranged in several rows, are the coats of arms of the abbeys, bishoprics, hereditary offices, and lordships. Outside the enclosure are the coats of arms of the noble families as well as those of the lineages of Leuven and Brussels.
