LEGUAT, François. *Travels and Adventures of François Leguat and His Companions on Two Deserted Islands in the East Indies* [...]. The whole work is illustrated with maps and figures. London: D. Mortier, 1708. 2 vols., 12mo: [14, incl. frontispiece]–xxviii (of xxx)–164, [4, incl. frontispiece]–180–[34] pp.; 29 (of 32) pl. (3 pl. missing in vol. 1, missing pp. xxix–xxx from the introduction in vol. 1, some pl. split along folds or with tears in folds, marginal hole in pl. p. 36 in vol. 1, some spotting or staining). Contemporary mottled sheepskin, gilt-ornamented spines with raised bands (somewhat rubbed). Rare first edition of the travels of the French explorer and naturalist Fr. Leguat (1638–1735). Illustrated with 2 frontispieces (repeated), a heraldic headpiece, and 29 plates, including folded maps (“Carte de l’Isle de Djego-Ruys,” “Isle de Bourbon apellée Mascarenas”) and plates depicting “an extraordinary monkey,” rhinoceroses, Hottentots, and endemic species now extinct. Leguat settled as part of a small group of French Protestant refugees on the uninhabited island of Rodrigues. After two years, they escaped to Mauritius, from where they returned to Europe in 1698. His adventures are noted for his observations on the natural history of the now-extinct fauna of Rodrigues. Ref. Chadenat 1150 & 1653. - Gay 3031.
