KIRCHER, Athanasius *A Panorama of China*, revealed and glorified through numerous monuments—both spiritual and secular—various manifestations of nature and art, and evidence of many other memorable things. Amsterdam: J. Janssonius van Waesberge & the widow E. Weyerstraten [= Sara Janssonius], 1668. Folio: [12 incl. frontispiece]–286–[10] pp.; 25 pl. (quire O bound after P, occasional spotting and light toning, some marginal water stains). Contemporary sheepskin, gilt-ornamented spine with raised bands (spine rebacked). First and only edition of the Dutch translation by J.H. Glazemaker (1620–1682) of the monumental work on China by the German Jesuit scholar Kircher (1602–1680), an important source on early Western sinology to this day. Engraved illustrations: frontispiece (in Latin, dated “1667”), 60 in-text illustrations and 24 plates (some folding) outside the main text, including 2 maps of China and Asia, specimens of Oriental scripts (Chinese, Syriac), gods, clothing, animals, etc. This work presents the first publication of the original Chinese and Syriac text of the Nestorian stele that was unearthed between 1623 and 1625; the successive chapters discuss the journeys undertaken in China, drawing parallels between Western, Indian, Chinese, and Japanese forms of idolatry, and covering fauna, flora, architecture, and mechanical arts, as well as the Chinese script.
