974 - WIENER, Charles. Peru and Bolivia. A Travelogue Followed by Archaeological and Ethnographic Studies and Notes on the Writing Systems and Languages of the Indigenous Peoples [...]. Paris: Hachette, 1880. Large 8vo (a few faint foxing spots throughout). Illustrated cardboard binding with gilt edges (spines and caps rubbed, corners worn, inner spine split, but overall in fine condition). First edition illustrated with color fold-out maps and a multitude of drawings within the text or as full-page illustrations. Hergé drew heavily on this work as an iconographic source for the legendary Tintin album *The Temple of the Sun*, published in 1949: the title and colophon decorations are based on a bas-relief from Tiahuanaco depicted on p. 703; the bridge from which Tintin is about to jump (p. 15) is inspired by the one on p. 460;- the chulpa where Tintin, Haddock, and Zorrino spend the night (p. 23) is depicted on p. 538; - the Inca ruins (mummies and pottery, p. 45) are reproduced on pp. 620 and 649; - the door leading to the Inca treasure (p. 61) is reproduced on p. 702, etc. We should also note the near homophony between the Urubamba River and the Brussels-based Arumbayas from *The Broken Ear* (1946). Ref. Not in Sabin.
