VANDERMAELEN, Philippe Universal Atlas of Physical, Political, Statistical, and Mineralogical Geography [...]. Brussels [P. Vandermaelen] 1827, 6 vols., folio: [4]-43-[1], [4], [4], [4], [4], [4] pp.; 388 hand-colored maps (water stain on the margin in the upper corner of vol. 1; occasional light toning in vol. 2; very few spots, but overall in good condition). Contemporary half-calf, marbled paper boards, spines with raised bands (some minor restorations to the spines, some light rubbing). Third edition of Ph. Vandermaelen’s folio-size atlas, published in installments between 1825 and 1827. It is the first atlas produced using the then-new printing process of lithography and the first to depict the entire world on maps using a large, uniform scale, resulting in the most detailed maps produced at the time—or, as a contemporary put it: “The broad outlines of the world are known; only the details are left to our perseverance.” It includes 6 general maps of the continents and 29 maps of Europe, 111 of Asia, 60 of Africa, 77 of North America, 44 of South America, and 60 of Oceania. Enriched with multiple alternative maps: map 24 (Greece) in vol. 1, map 102 in vol. 2, map 5 (Egypt) in vol. 3, maps 38, 39 (Oregon), 41, 46 (California), and 47 (Mexico) in vol. 4, and map 16 in part 6. Ref. Annotated Inventory of the Vandermaelen Cartographic Collections, Vol. V, Atlas [3]. Acquired from the Borluut family (armored bookplate with the inscription “Groeninghe velt”).
