EVENEPOEL, Henri Corneille: Funerary monument of the Counts van der Stegen from the Riches-Claires Convent in Brussels. Certified copy and deed of transfer. Brussels, December 18, 1784; approx. 81 x 41 cm (as displayed), on vellum; on the front, a pen-and-ink drawing in brown ink and watercolor with a certification in French, a tax stamp dated 1784, and a seal under the paper; on the reverse, text in French with the artist’s signature and a red wax seal (a few minor spots and slight soiling). Mounted in a glass-fronted frame on both sides. A spectacular, finely executed color depiction of a Baroque-style marble tombstone, adorned with some thirty coats of arms. This funerary monument had been erected in the church of the Convent of the Grandes Claires (or Rich Claires) in Brussels (the inscription is dated 1723). The convent was closed by Joseph II in 1783, and following the imperial edict of June 26, 1784, regarding burials, the tombs were dismantled or destroyed. On the reverse side of our document is the deed signed by Henri Corneille Evenepoel, attorney at the Council of Brabant, acting in his capacity as administrator of the suppressed convents in the city of Brussels and president of the committee of the Brussels Religious Fund. He formalizes the transfer of the tombstone to Count Jean-Baptiste van der Stegen, chamberlain to the emperor and drossard of Brabant, a high judicial and administrative office in the duchy.
