At the time, he was director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. His correspondent, the wife of Léon Bérardi, editor of the newspaper “L’Indépendance belge,” hosted a salon for the Brussels elite and had numerous connections in literary and artistic circles. “You are the kindest woman I know […]; I am also very happy to have been able to please you with the portraits; I must admit that this is a true joy for me [...] very proud to count myself among your closest friends [...]".
