"Lamartine" (minor tear with no loss at the top of one document). Letters addressed to the editor of "L'Indépendance belge," L. Bérardi (his name appears on the 9th line of the second letter), regarding a letter from an American author whom Lamartine recommends to Bérardi for publication and which, “according to the author, may have an impact in France and especially in America if you have correspondents there,” as well as a request for complimentary copies of the newspaper. Enclosed: a carte-de-visite portrait of Lamartine, a photographic reproduction. Paris, É. Neurdein, [c. 1870–1880]. Albumen print, 8.7 x 5.5 cm; white backing card with name printed in red, 10.2 x 6.3 cm; photographer’s mark on the reverse (print lightly pricked).
