Mask, "n'gré" Bete. Ivory Coast Without base Wood, iron. H 30 cm. Provenance: - Galerie Walu, René and Denise David, Basel. - 1964: Margrit and Walter Schweizer, Kastanienbaum. - 2007: Swiss private collection, Zurich. A remarkable comparable piece, which can be attributed to the same sculptor based on its characteristic stylistic elements, is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv. No. 1985.418.1). Another, nearly identical mask by this artist was auctioned on June 17, 2025, at Native Auctions in Brussels (Lot 32). Particularly striking are the extensive similarities in the sculptural design of the distinctive, angular mustache and the arched forehead. The regularly arranged circular indentations on this mask are the remnants of metal nails that were originally attached but are now missing; such nails are still present on the two comparable pieces. This mask, too, was originally adorned with a trim of fur or hair below the mustache, which has not survived. -------------------------------- The Bété people, native to the southwestern part of the Ivory Coast, are known for their powerfully designed, anthropomorphic masks, which often feature intimidating facial features. Originally, these masks are said to have served, among other purposes, to prepare men for warfare. Later, they were used on a wide variety of occasions, such as ceremonial festivities, commemorative ceremonies in honor of important figures, court proceedings, or even for the entertainment of the village community.
