Cotton blanket, "escalier" Fulbe (Peul). Mali Without base Cotton. W 135 cm. L 300 cm. Provenance: Swiss private collection, Bern. Acquired in Abidjan between 1969 and 1972. These multicolored cotton textiles, known as “tapi,” were produced primarily by Fulbe (Peul) and Songhai weavers in the Niger Bend region. Over the course of the 20th century, their production increasingly spread to urban centers such as Mopti and Bamako. They are characterized by their vibrant colors and geometric patterns, which are created by sewing individual panels of fabric together. Such textiles served both as blankets and throws as well as decorative wall hangings. In particular, they were an important part of the wedding trousseau of wealthy families in Mali. When hung as wall hangings or draped over beds, they served not only a decorative function but also a representational purpose, underscoring the families’ social standing. CHF 300 / 600 Weight in grams: 1810 Condition: Hammer Auctions places great importance on providing a careful and as precise as possible description of all lots offered in the catalog. Each lot is documented with several photographs intended to provide as comprehensive an impression as possible of its condition. This includes, in particular, visible signs of wear, irregularities, and age-related changes. We recommend that all interested parties and bidders carefully examine the photographs before placing a bid, as they form an essential part of the lot description.
