1329 - Zama Vanessa Helder (American, 1904-1968). Oil on board painting titled "The Pool in the Woods," depicting the reflection of a verdant green forested landscape shown in a still pond. Signed along the lower left; further signed and titled along the verso. Lot essay: Active primarily from the 1930s through the 1950s, Zama Vanessa Helder is recognized as one of the most important West Coast female artists, particularly due to her distinctive precisionist aesthetic that defied watercolor’s natural style. Born in Washington, she trained at the University of Washington and later studied in New York at the Art Students League with prominent American artists such as Frank Vincent DuMond, George Picken, and Robert Brackman. Helder gained national attention in 1936 when her work was accepted in the American Watercolor Society’s exhibition in New York. After a series of successful solo shows, Helder further achieved national prominence when she was selected as one of only two women in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1943 exhibition "American Realists and Magic Realists." Over a career spent between Seattle, Spokane, and Los Angeles, she frequently taught art and exhibited at major institutions, including the Whitney, the Met, the Denver Art Museum, and the Seattle Art Museum. Helder’s time in New York was pivotal in refining her controlled, architectural approach to watercolor, aligning her work with Precisionist figures such as Charles Sheeler and Peter Blume. Rejecting the medium’s typical fluidity, she favored crisp clarity with a smooth, tempera-like finish. Her technical mastery allowed her to execute tight, meticulously rendered compositions while preserving a sense of luminous atmospheric depth. Unframed; height: 11 1/4 in x width: 15 1/4 in. Framed; height: 19 in x width: 23 1/4 in x depth: 2 in.
