Léonard Tsuguharu FOUJITA (1886–1968). Portrait of Lucien Fabre (1889–1952), circa 1923. Black India ink and mineral pigments on silk, signed in the center right “Tsuguharu” in Japanese and “Foujita.” H. 29 - W. 20 cm. Small, scattered foxing spots. Accompanied by an AGRB certificate of authenticity issued by Sylvie Buisson and Casimir Buisson, experts on T.L. Foujita at the French Union of Experts in Works of Art, dated October 14, 2026. This previously unpublished work, now cataloged in the Foujita-Buisson archives, will be included in Volume 5 of the Catalogue Raisonné of Tsuguharu Léonard Foujita, currently in preparation. Lucien Fabre is the author of a collection of poems, *Vanikoro*, published by Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française in 1923, whose first edition featured a copperplate engraving of the author’s portrait as a frontispiece. This engraving, the only one known to date, is directly derived from the unpublished work we are presenting at auction. Such a portrait illustrates Foujita’s well-known connection to the Parisian literary circles of his time, including Jean Cocteau, Robert Desnos, and Lucien Fabre.
