18TH-CENTURY NEAPOLITAN WORKSHOP Polychrome carved and inlaid marble. Holy water font with an oval gray marble pediment, decorated with a figure of the Virgin Mary surmounted by three cherub heads, volutes, and plant motifs in light-colored marble; a projecting basin carved in the shape of a seashell. The exuberance of the ornamentation and the chromatic contrast of the marbles are characteristic of the work of 18th-century Neapolitan marble carvers. Naples, first half of the 18th century.
